Irstea has set up collaborations with higher education institutions for academic purposes and also for pooling skills at a regional level.
Developing, maintaining and building lasting relations with higher education is a main priority of Irstea. These collaborations, which take various forms, take place on an individual or collective basis.
Irstea increases its involvement with higher education by collaborating with doctoral programmes.
Irstea is involved with local doctoral programmes which aim to unite the academic environment with multi-disciplinary activities.
It also participates in doctoral programmes in genuine national establishments in support of our themes:

Irstea is the host laboratory to numerous doctoral programmes and is involved in the teaching of Masters programmes:

Habilitation à diriger des recherches – an accreditation to supervise research
This accreditation to supervise research, created under the Act of 26 January 1984 for higher education and modified on 23 November 1988, is a national diploma based on a course of study and presented orally before a jury, which recognises a high scientific level and is characterised by:
- an original approach to a scientific field
- mastery of an independent scientific research strategy
- the ability to mentor young doctoral students
The accreditation to supervise research is a diploma with an essential purpose is to allow access to the university teaching body. Candidates must be holders of a PhD or demonstrate a degree or work experience at an equivalent level.
In 2007, 56 employees from the establishment held the accreditation to supervise research.
In 2010, XX employees held the accreditation to supervise research.
