Water has long been the subject of arrangements, uses and forms of organisation that have been maintained and adapted in accordance with technical discoveries and social, political and economic evolutions.
We have now entered a time of mounting competition for water and land resources against a backdrop of climate uncertainty and radical changes in public policies. The “Water resource management, actors and uses” joint research unit (G-EAU) undertakes research with a view to:
- Putting forward planning methods and tools to help manage water at the level of catchment areas or aquifers (holistic Resource-Use model, simplified representations and negotiation supports)
- Improving coordination of sectorial policies and land and water use in a context in which resources are used in a variety of ways – which can sometimes be conflicting – and by an array of different people
- Supplying managers with means for enhancing commercial or personal water supply services (e.g. for farming, drinking water and sanitation), backed up by automatic water flow regulation tools, economic instruments, methods for coordinating with authorities and tools for facilitating user participation
- Innovating to produce irrigation systems that are less sensitive to variables (market, climate, etc.), thereby reducing environmental risks and making better economic use of water.
The unit has French, European and international partners, notably in the South (CGIAR; universities, etc.).
