Forest fires

Fire represents one of the biggest disturbances to which our Mediterranean forest ecosystems are subjected with 600,000 hectares burnt every year.

The need to prevent fire-related risks is recurrent and urgent during the summer.

At Irstea, the research focuses on mapping vulnerable areas using decision-support tools. It also studies the impact of repeated fires on biodiversity and the regeneration of forest ecosystems.

Discover some of the research intended to better understand, characterise and prevent fire hazards.
