The Ichthyology Laboratory

The Ichthyology laboratory consists of several rooms:

  • the wet room, to receive samples and carry out basic observations on fish or crustaceans;
  • the dry room, for microscope work and sensitive measurements;
  • the clean room, to prepare ultra-clean samples for ultrastructural or microchemical analysis.

Wet room (sorting + preparation)

This area is mainly used for short-term storage of frozen samples; sorting and dissecting fish.

Image acquisition area or dry room

This is where samples are observed and data logged. This space can be a dark room for better observation quality and to see signs of epifluorescence. A precision scale (0 to 120g d: 0.1mg) is installed on an anti-vibration table.

Nikon 90i Microscope workstation
  • x1 x10 x20 x50 x100 lenses (dry); head, lenses, motorized xyz.
  • Fluorescence filters: tetracycline, alizarin and calcein.
  • Intensilight generator for fluorescence; self-centering light
  • Polarizer and analyzer
  • Digital camera
  • Dedicated computer with NISD software to count and measure as well as acquire images and videos. Connection to internal network and Internet

Nikon SMZ 1500 stereomicroscope workstation

  • x1 and x0.5 lenses, 0.75 to 11.25 zoom
  • Stereoscopic, tilting, ergonomic head
  • Transmitted and reflected lighting
  • Polarizer and analyzer
  • large work area (110 m)
  • Trinocular output with digital colour camera
  • Dedicated computer with NISD software to count and measure as well as acquire images and videos. Connection to internal network and Internet
  • 1 Nikon x40 x100 x 200 x400 microscope

Clean room

This laboratory is used to prepare clean samples in controlled atmospheric conditions in order to perform microchemical microanalyses of otoliths, genetic analyses, and analysis of isotopes for all types of tissue. Darkness possible.
The storage room for calcified parts is used to ensure the long-term integrity of collections.

This laboratory is ISO 8 certified.
