Laboratory for physicochemical analyses of aquatic environments

The team of the laboratory for physicochemical analyses helps to advance understanding of pollution related to metallic or organic contaminants from industrial or residential sources and nitrogen and phosphorous compounds.

Organisation and areas of research

The Laboratory for physicochemical analyses of aquatic environments covers three research areas:

  •  Organic contaminants

Marina Coquery is responsible for the scientific coordination of the research carried out by the laboratory’s teams and the support provided by the laboratory to thematic research teams involved in analytical chemistry and environmental chemistry, including the so-called ARCEAU (water cycle and management of resources and risks), BELCA (biological and ecological disruptors linked to chemical contamination caused by humans) and TED (waste water purification and sewage systems) research themes
 
The research projects in progress are all undertaken as part of efforts to preserve aquatic environments and contribute towards increasing understanding of toxic pollution arising from metallic or organic contaminants (from industrial or residential sources) and nitrogen and phosphorous compounds.
 
Progress made includes the development of validated measuring technologies that have the capacity both to take samples in specific fields and perform efficient chemical analyses in laboratories or on-site. These technologies improve surveillance and data acquisition tools, deepening our knowledge of the levels of exposure of aquatic systems to priority pollutants and emerging substances.
 
The Laboratory devotes particular attention to developing protocols for analysing metals, pesticides and degradation products, PCBs, trace drugs and endocrine disruptors in environmental matrices (surface waters, waste water, soils, sediments, aquatic organisms, etc.).
 
There are also ongoing research projects on the development and validation of tools for assessing the bioavailability of pollutants, notably the implementation of integrative samplers in water or sediments.
 
All of the laboratory’s team are also engaged in quality assurance work relating to their various activities.

Activities

Major chemical parameters

The laboratory undertakes analyses of the major chemical parameters to the support research work carried out by the Wastewater purification team in the unit, working very closely with the team on all aspects of “the chemistry of water”; it provides similar support to the Ecotoxicology and Microbian Ecology of Man-Made Systems (EMHA) teams and, as requested, for other teams in Irstea Lyon.

Inorganic contaminants

The research in progress, which is undertaken in association with the EMHA and Diffuse Pollution teams, explores exposure to, and transfers of, metals in water courses and the evaluation of geothermal flows. Work carried out with the Wastewater purification team enables the quantification of metals in wastewater influents and effluents and measures the effectiveness of different types of treatment. Lastly, research conducted with the Ecotoxicology and EMHA teams investigates the bioavailability of metals in sediments.

Organic micropolluants

The laboratory participates actively in research into the exposure and transfer of plant treatment products in aquatic environments with the unit’s  EMHA and Pollutions diffuses teams.

Research is also underway in tandem with the Wastewater purification team into the quantification of pharmaceutical substances in effluents from domestic water treatment plants and in aquatic environments.

Furthermore, the researchers looking into Organic Micropollutants take part, along with the Ecotoxicology team, in research and consultancy on PCBs (consultancy on pollution of the Rhône, research on the transfer of PCBs to the biota).

The laboratory develops protocols for analysing pesticides, HAPs, PCBs and trace drugs in complex environmental matrices (surface water, effluents, soils, sediments, sludge, biofilms, biological organisms, etc.). Varied experimentation (adsorption and desorption kinetics, etc.) is also undertaken.

The laboratory is also involved in studying passive samplers such as POCIS and SPMD. These integrative systems gather contaminants in aquatic environments and make it possible to gauge the average concentrations over a period of several days to several weeks. This allows for more representative measurement of contamination than with sporadic sampling.

Tools and technical equipment

  • Techniques for the physicochemical analyses of water and other solid matrices in the aquatic environment (sludge, plant and animal organisms).
  • Techniques for preparing samples and analysing trace metals: spectrometry of atomic absorption (oven and flame), ICP-MS (with class 100 ultraclean work space).
  • Techniques for analysing trace mercury in water and solids: spectrometry of atomic fluorescence and spectrometry of atomic absorption, with gold trap pre-concentration.
  • Techniques for preparing samples for organic contaminants: automated extraction of solid and liquid matrices (ASE Dionex and Zymark Autotrace and Rapidtrace).
  • Chromatography techniques for preparing the isolation and fractionation on resin of dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments.
  • Chromatography techniques: gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection (quadrupole and ionic gate), electronic and thermionic collection; in liquid phase with tandem mass spectrometry (triple quadrupole), UV absorbance and fluorescence, gel permeation chromatography for determining the molecular weight of dissolved organic matters.
