The research and public policy support activities at Lyon and Strasbourg concern the field of water.
Lyon's major knowledge production goals involve improving water resource management, reducing pollutant and toxic waste impact on aquatic ecosystems, reducing vulnerability to risks associated with the water cycle, flooding and also droughts. The Strasbourg unit is involved in public environment services' performance.
Setting up highly diversified research programmes is helped by the density of our partnerships with the universities and schools that are members of the PRES (Research Clusters and Higher Education) at Lyon University, Strasbourg University, research organisations and their regional groups (Envirhonalp (Rhone-Alps environmental research centre for sustainable development), ZABR (Workshop area of the Rhone basin), OTHU (Field Observatory in Water Management)), the new Institute of Analytical Sciences, local authorities and companies and several foreign labs.
The Lyon centre runs experimental field studies (instrumented watersheds on the Yzeron, the Morcille, and the Arc), in the two technological halls dedicated to hydraulics and purification of waste water and in labs. The Lyon teams build models and create pollution diagnosis tools, whilst also developing concepts and methods.
Irstea (National Institute for Environmental and Agricultural Science and Research) in Lyon constantly welcomes PhD students, engineers and masters' students on internships, plus foreign researchers.
The Lyon centre actively participates in dialogue between science and society, particularly during events such as Science Week or Researchers' Night.
