Dr Olivier Piller received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Bordeaux, France in 1995. Since then, he has been working for the Water Infrastructure Asset Management Team of the Irstea institute in Bordeaux (France) as a Research Scientist.

In December 2018, he became Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide. In 2019, he earned his habilitation thesis degree (accreditation to supervise research, French HDR) in Engineering Sciences, from the CNAM Paris (DS 432).

His research interest is on Water Distribution Systems (WDS) Analysis with an emphasis on network modelling, model calibration, optimal meter placement problems, leakage control, optimisation of WDS, water network security and critical infrastructure.

Ongoing and past projects

He has been involved in several research projects funded by the European Union:  Recently, he was involved in the FP7 research project SecurEau on security and decontamination of drinking water distribution systems following a deliberate contamination event under the Seventh Framework Programme. He was also the ANR coordinator for the French-German bilateral project SMaRT-OnlineWDN (http://www.smart-onlinewdn.eu/). The main objective was the development of an online security management toolkit for water distribution networks that is based on sensor measurements of water quality as well as water quantity. He is the ANR coordinator and project spokesperson for the French-German project ResiWater (http://www.resiwater.eu/) that is funded on the Protection of Critical Infrastructures PICS 2014 call. ResiWater started in July 2015 and will last 3 years. The main objective is the development of tools to prepare water utilities for crisis management and enhance their resilience with regard to three specific case studies: natural disaster, water quality deterioration and cascade effects between water, energy and IT infrastructures. He has developed the water quantity and water quality calculation engines in the Porteau software that is used by 250 water utilities and consultants (http://porteau.irstea.fr/).
