FRISE - Refrigeration process engineering

Département :
Centre :

The research of this unit deals with thermal energy and energetics in industries (food, pharmaceuticals, air-conditioning, etc.) which use refrigeration as well as in associated supply chains.

GPAN research unit

This research unit studies the flow and transfer of heat and materials in food and equipment as well as the design of state-of-the-art refrigeration systems with reduced environmental impact. All of these activities include modelling, experimental validation and assessment.

The unit has 20 permanent staff, 14 doctoral students. It welcomes 10 students per year (engineer interns and Master’s students).

Fields of application

  • Food industry
  • Refrigeration industry
  • Air conditioning industry
  • Pharmaceutical industry

Areas of research

Convective, conductive and diffusive transfers – the coupling of heat and material transfer  – insulated objects and macroporous environments – flow and distribution of air in refrigeration equipment – thermics and  hydrodynamics of liquids and semi-liquids used in refrigeration processes – food cold-chain – modelling and simulation of thermodynamic systems, command and control – energetics of refrigeration systems – thermo-hydraulics and complex fluids.

Research projects

The European FRISBEE project

Food Refrigeration Innovations for Safety, Consumers’ Benefit, Environmental Impact and Energy Optimisation along the Cold Chain in Europe.

This project seeks to develop new, innovative, mathematical modelling tools to ensure food quality and safety, energy conservation, environmental protection and economy and to predict and control food quality and safety in the cold chain.

Quant'HACCP – Quantitative evaluation of microbiological risks

This project uses quantitative evaluation methodologies to assess risks (AQR) in order to optimise microbiological risk management measures. Financed by ANR PNRA – 1 January 2008 – 31 December 2011.

PIE – CNRS Interdisciplinary Energy Program

Energy Program Symposium 2009. Ultrasolid project presentation.
Topics: Energy Efficiency – Magnetic Cold – Processes.

Coupling between storage and transport of cold by hydrous slurry

Thesis presented by: Pascal CLAIN

Hydrous slurries are biphasic (solid/liquid) refrigerant fluids having high energy density and whose phase-change enthalpy is greater than that of ice. Hydrated slurries help to reduce the environmental impact of refrigeration equipment by reducing the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

  • Hall technology
  • Climatic cells dedicated to research activities
  • Prototype of a refrigeration vehicle loaded with pallets
  • Ice slurry prototype
  • Experimental air vein
  • Controlled-temperature rheometer
  • Multi-sample differential thermal analysis (DTA)
  • Syringe-pump for calibrated injection of gas
  • 2D particle imaging velocimeter (PIV)
